Brussels Celebrates 250 Years of American Independence

Exclusive report by Isaia Tsaousidou

The 250th anniversary of American independence was marked with a spectacular celebration at Brussels’ iconic Parc du Cinquantenaire, bringing together political leaders, diplomats and more than 8.800 guests.

U.S. Ambassador to Belgium Bill White hosted the event alongside U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker and U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Andrew Puzder.

Ambassador White and his husband, Bryan Eure, formally opened the celebrations, welcoming the guests and thanking them for joining the United States in commemorating the historic 250th anniversary.

Among the prominent speakers and guests were Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Alexus G. Grynkewich, and the three U.S. ambassadors based in Brussels.

In their remarks, the speakers highlighted the enduring importance of the transatlantic relationship and the continued cooperation between Europe and the United States.

U.S. President Donald J. Trump also addressed the gathering through a video message.

“For generations, the American and Belgian peoples have cherished the values of freedom, democracy and self-government,” he said. “Our men and women in uniform gave their lives for those values during the world wars, and I am confident that the Belgian people have never forgotten that.”

Symbolic Gifts Honoring a Historic Alliance

One of the evening’s most symbolic moments came when Prime Minister De Wever presented Ambassador White with a specially designed crystal vase containing soil collected from Belgian battlefields where American soldiers lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars.

The gift represented the longstanding friendship between Belgium and the United States, as well as the sacrifices made by both nations in defense of freedom.

Ambassador White also received a symbolic gift from Antwerp’s diamond industry: a specially designed gold and diamond ring intended for President Trump.

“A ring is more than a piece of jewellery,” an industry representative said. “It represents unity and trust, because true friendships are forged under pressure.”

A Monumental Anniversary Cake

Another highlight of the celebration was an enormous cake created by renowned Belgian-British pastry chef Michael Lewis-Anderson. Decorated in the colors of the United States and featuring the American flag, the cake was designed as a tribute to the country’s 250th anniversary.

Known internationally as the “Cake King,” Lewis-Anderson joined the three U.S. ambassadors, Roberta Metsola and Bart De Wever on stage for the ceremonial cutting of the cake. The moment celebrated the birthday of the United States while also symbolizing the future of the transatlantic alliance.

Lewis-Anderson is famous for producing elaborate royal cakes, including creations for the wedding of Belgium’s King Philippe and Queen Mathilde, Princess Astrid’s 50th birthday and Queen Paola’s 80th birthday.

He is also involved in charitable initiatives, producing intricate works of art from sugar and chocolate. King Philippe gave him the nickname “Cake King,” while Austria awarded him its Gold Medal of Peace for his contribution to the Flame of Peace initiative.

Members of the Belgian government attending the event included Defence Minister Theo Francken, Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot and Justice Minister Annelies Verlinden. Numerous European and American politicians, diplomats and officials were also present.

Music, Aircraft and a Spectacular Drone Show

The evening’s entertainment began with a performance by Alexis Wilkins, who was warmly welcomed by the audience. She was followed by the U.S. Army Europe and Africa Band and Chorus.

The celebrations culminated in a concert by the Zac Brown Band, followed by an elaborate drone show. The drones formed images including the Statue of Liberty, the White House and an American eagle, before fireworks illuminated the sky above the Cinquantenaire’s historic triumphal arch.

An aerial display featuring historic aircraft and two American C-130 transport planes provided another impressive moment.

Guests were also able to enjoy traditional American food, including corn dogs, Texas barbecue ribs and macaroni and cheese. Country music, dancing, baseball and a range of interactive activities added to the festive atmosphere.

Strict security measures were in place throughout the event, and admission was limited to guests holding personal invitations.

A heartfelt thank-you to my dear friend, the renowned pastry chef and “Cake King” Michael Lewis-Anderson, for inviting me to share in one of the most creative moments of his career. We had the privilege of experiencing the most magnificent celebration of the 250th anniversary of American independence—by far the best in all of Europe!

Congratulations also to U.S. Ambassador Bill White for hosting and presenting the event so brilliantly!
